What's up guys? Today I'm pissed off, and rightfully so. It turns out I started writing a simple PowerShell script, something super small, no advanced AI or fancy architecture, just a damn script. I said "let's use the latest crap from Anthropic, Claude Opus 4.7".
And man, are you kidding me! I check my API billing statement and I just spent 35 dollars. THIRTY-FIVE DOLLARS! For a script that I could have done in Bash in 10 minutes for free, but you know how it is when you want to "optimize your time". It turns out this model comes with a highly hyped feature they call "Extended Thinking". What Anthropic doesn't tell you clearly is that this thing consumes output tokens like there's no tomorrow.
It starts to "think", "reason step by step", "evaluate options", and every damn reasoning token is charged at gold prices. While Claude "thinks", your wallet empties in real-time. I started investigating on Reddit and dev forums, and it turns out I'm not the only one. There are tons of users complaining because their API bills tripled or quadrupled overnight.

Let's not play dumb. The model is a beast, yes. The code comes out perfect, too. But it's a blatant robbery to charge those amounts for mundane tasks. If you're programming a quantum neural network, sure, spend 50 bucks. But to make a shitty PowerShell script that moves files from one folder to another, it's an insult. They are abusing token consumption and indie devs are the ones paying the price.
Alternatives to this damn robbery
If you're as fed up as I am with maintaining the yachts of Anthropic's executives, here are some awesome alternatives that won't leave you bankrupt:
- DeepSeek R1/V3: The Chinese came to break the market. The model reasons equally or better, and the costs are a tiny fraction. Literally, you can process entire books and you won't spend what I spent on this script.
- Llama 3.3 / Llama 4 Lite (Meta): Run it locally, dude. I told you in a previous post. If you have a good Mac or a decent server, download the model and run it yourself. 100% free, absolute privacy, and nobody charges you for output tokens.
- Google Gemini 2.5 Pro: Through Google AI Studio, if you set your quota right, prices are ridiculously more accessible or even free on the dev tier. Plus, the 2 million token context window is a beauty.
- OpenAI o3-mini / GPT-4.5: OpenAI's reasoning models, but optimized so it doesn't bleed your budget.
The conclusion is simple: don't be sheep. Analyze your costs, monitor your consumption (because APIs are now black boxes that steal from you), and learn to choose the right model for the right task. As for me, I'm never touching Anthropic's Extended Thinking in Opus 4.7 for crappy scripts again. I'm going back to my open-source models and DeepSeek.
Did you guys get screwed with your latest API bill too? Leave your cries on my social networks. Ciao.
